Boy George revealed he has split from the manager of his record label, Boy George Presents, who wanted “nothing to do” with his new pro-Israel track.
Culture Club singer Boy George sparked much controversy last week after releasing a song in support of Israel’s military campaign against Hamas, “We Will Dance Again.” Now, the 65-year-old singer has cut ties with Tony Pontius, the manager of his record label, Boy George Presents (BGP).
“Due to my decision to stand up for my Jewish friends, I am losing a few people from my life,” he wrote on X. “Today I parted company with Tony Pontius, who has run my record label BGP for a number of years. I wanted to release ‘We Will Dance Again’ but he was unequivocal and said, ‘I want nothing to do with this song,’ and I responded, ‘OK, we are done.’”
“When someone is gutless, it really does not hurt to say goodbye,” he added. “My faith in humanity will not diminish, and the truth will always win. I will release it!”
Notably, this is not the same manager who announced last week that Boy George had quit the role of King Herod in a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” That was George’s longtime manager, Paul “PK” Kemsley.
“We Will Dance Again,” an AI-assisted song, is currently unavailable on streaming services, and Boy George has recommended fans purchase it on Bandcamp.
“You can buy it; it’s cheap,” he said on Instagram on Saturday. “I really want the song to be out there and be heard and be played in cars and bars and people’s houses, out the window. Wherever it can be played, really.”
“Not everyone’s happy with it. I will be re-recording the song myself in the next few days and singing it very proudly,” George added. “Fuck the haters.”
Since announcing the song, Boy George has been the subject of much criticism over the track’s lyrics, which appear to criticize the pro-Palestine movement across much of popular culture.
On Friday, George addressed some of the backlash, noting that “the suggestion that I feel no compassion for Palestinians is both untrue and absurd. I am devastated for the loss of the innocent lives on both sides of this war, and I call for peace.”
