The man at the centre of the ‘Clicky Ponting’ scandal has copped a massive suspension while his club has been heavily punished after the bizarre saga that stunned the cricket world.

Earlier this year Brian Devine was identified as the 38-year-old club cricketer who, while representing Saltburn’s second XI in England’s North Yorkshire and South Durham League, would click his fingers to trick umpires into giving batters out caught behind.

On Friday (AEDT) British media reported Devine had been banned from cricket for two years.

It means he cannot participate in any cricket under the jurisdiction of the ECB, running from September 30, 2026 to September 29, 2028 and covering playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring and managing junior teams.

Saltburn had already suspended Devine saying he would never play for the club again.

But the club itself has also been heavily punished with the seconds team relegated to the third division – Middlesbrough CC’s seconds side being saved from relegation in the process – while Saltburn will also start the 2027 season with a 60-point deduction.

“The club fully participated in the disciplinary proceedings and accept the decision of the appeal following the original decision from the League. We are now focusing on preparations for the 2027 season,” Saltburn CC said.
