Australian cricket great Mike Hussey has knocked back the Poms to join Australia’s coaching staff, with the former middle-order star set to play a big role in next year’s Ashes and beyond.
According to Cricket Australia, Hussey has signed on to join Andrew McDonald’s coaching setup, despite England making a strong push to secure his services.
The Poms had been chasing the former Australian batter, with Stephen Fleming eager to bring Hussey into the English setup.

However, the 51-year-old has opted to stay with Australia, taking on a consultancy role that will see him involved in some of the biggest tournaments on the international calendar.
Hussey is set to feature heavily in the lead-up to next year’s Ashes and World Cup, whilst also taking on an advisory role for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup.
He won’t have to wait long to get started, with Hussey set to join Australia for the upcoming T20 series against England, before helping the batters prepare for their Test series against New Zealand.
It’s a big addition to McDonald’s coaching staff, with the Australian coach well aware of what Hussey can bring to the group.
“Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players,” McDonald said.

For Hussey, getting back involved with the Australian side on a more regular basis is something he’s looking forward to, particularly with so much cricket on the horizon.
“I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” Hussey said.
“This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period.”
