The Daily Telegraph is reporting the official announcement will be made next week and he’s the first significant forward the newest franchise has signed after securing a number of star backs including Jarome Luai, Brian To’o and Joey Manu.

Young toured the Chiefs’ set-up on Wednesday where he talked with coach Willie Peters and general manager of football Michael Chammas.

The Chiefs will need to have Young on their salary cap at $1 million per season due to the Raiders’ offer of $1.1 million a year which helped set his notional value.

Young said prior to agreeing to the two-year deal that being debt-free would play a major role in heading to PNG.

“One of the reasons why I’ve done this is because I’m 28 years old, I’m single, I don’t have any family in Canberra. It’s nothing against Canberra as to why I’ve gone up there and had a look,” Young told the Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday.

“Canberra is a club I love. ‘Sticky’ (Stuart) has given me everything, and he still does.

“But it is in the back of my mind I can do two or three years up there and come home and be mortgage-free.

“I haven’t come from money, so there are those benefits I can give my family and everyone around me. I also want to keep developing as a good footballer.”

Young said he was only doing what hundreds of other NRL players are doing in exploring his future options.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is fed up with the situation and is open to Young moving on immediately if he can find a club for 2027 before the Chiefs enter the NRL the following year.

But Young wants to stay in Canberra to finish off his current deal.

“If I do move on in 2028, I don’t want to play for another club in 2027,” Young said.

The Raiders sensationally pulled a $4.4 million offer to Young last week which was the richest offer to a player in the club’s history.

It’s going to be hard for him to find a new home in 2027 given he’s recovering from a snapped Achilles and may not be ready to play in the early rounds next year.
