Cameron’s car erupted into flames on the left rear corner, forcing Cameron to jump out of the race and stop the car.
Cameron safely pulled the car over nearly a marshalling post, where officials could extinguish the burning Mustang.
“That has had an enormous fire under the rear axel,” Richard Craill said in commentary.
“It was smart of Aaron Cameron to stop where he did near a well-marshalled, well-flagged officials point on the inside of Turn 4.”
The incident turned the race on its head, with dominant leader Matt Payne dropping to third behind Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki in a dramatic pit sequence.
Brown and Kostecki were released ahead of Payne, who took on just enough fuel to drop from the lead to third, ahead of Cam Waters and Anton De Pasquale.
Broc Feeney and Thomas Randle were forced to double stack behind their teammates, with Feeney dropping from fourth to eighth, and Randle to 16th.
Cameron had earlier been caught up in a spirited battle with Jack Le Brocq, with Le Brocq’s Matt Stone Racing Camaro making contact with Cameron’s left rear wheel.
Race engineer Daniel Veronese suspected tyre damage or fuel may have caused the issue, with the team set to diagnose the drama.
“There was a fire in the cabin so I stopped the car and got out,” Cameron said.
“I had a smoke for the last couple of laps prior to that but the fire only really started into 1 so I saw there was fire, found some people with fire extinguishers, pulled the car over and got out because I didn’t really want to stay in there.”
