Camp Tontozona dodgeball has become a tradition for ASU football.
There’s a lot of competition, a lot of controversy and a lot of trash-talk, but it gaves the players a chance to unwind and work within a team outside of their position groups.
Teams are based on the group they weight train with. It’s not based on your position group or graduation year, and it gives players and assistant coaches to interact more closely with players that may be on the other side of the football as them. Throughout the offseason and camp, these groups compete in various activities, and the rankings are closely watched.
As this game becomes more of a tradition and evolves, so does the strategy. I watched Brian Ward – who was injured and not competing – checking out the competition on another field when their team had already wrapped up the win. There was a numbers discrepency between two teams and tight ends coach Jason Mohns suggested the coaches sit out. His team was competing against Trenton Bourguet’s team.
Trenton’s dodgeball prowess has become a thing of legend at Camp T, and Mohns was happily going to sacrifice himself if that meant the opposing team’s best player was on the sideline.
It was a great chance for the team to continue to compete but get away from helmets and pads for a bit.
They’ll get back to it with their Camp Tontozona scrimmage on Saturday at 9 AM.
