The Chad Hugo v. Pharrell Williams legal battle just got even uglier: Now, Team Hugo is aggressively pushing back against Williams’ dismissal motion and alleged effort to “turn The Neptunes’ success into the work of only one person.”

Hugo just recently urged the court to reject Williams’ dismissal request, which arrived closer to October’s start. And as we previously broke down, the overarching courtroom confrontation centers on the plaintiff’s Neptunes due-royalties and missing-credits claims.

With Hugo and Williams having established the production duo nearly four decades ago, the suit’s many intricacies probably won’t come as a surprise. Throw in separate claims concerning N.E.R.D., plus a couple amended actions, and you’re left with a multifaceted dispute.

This complexity is apparent in the litigants’ latest filings, which cover a number of angles that wouldn’t necessarily make for an engaging read here. But to recap, Williams and his team called out the suit’s alleged lack of specifics – including in terms of the exact recordings and compositions at issue.

In the defendants’ view, Hugo and his own team had ample time to file the complaint but “did not assert a single copyright claim” upon doing so at 2026’s start. An amended action allegedly pointed to “eight particular works and an enormous, but vaguely-identified additional universe of claimed works.”

The scaled-back second amended complaint, Williams added for good measure, “cannot say whether Hugo claims ownership of the composition, the sound recording, or both.”

Shifting the focus to Hugo’s dismissal motion opposition, the professional is adamant that a longstanding split agreement applies to his sought credits on the Neptunes projects in question.

“The Neptunes always had even split of the publishing on every composition, which is an objective manifestation of an intent to be co-authors,” a relevant section reads. “The recording at issue was always intended to be produced by The Neptunes.”
