Even with the 2018 movie being a gigantic box office hit (one of the biggest ever for the rom-com genre), it has taken nearly a decade for any real movement on a follow-up to ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.
Now, finally, HBO has given the go-ahead to a TV series that will continue the story. This, despite plenty of talk of the movie getting a sequel through the years.
“The only thing crazier than love is family.”

‘Asians’ stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng are all returning to lead the show, while Michelle Yeoh will also be back as Golding’s character’s imperious mother, in a recurring role.

What’s the story of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’?
Based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling books, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ introduced us to the world of Chinese-American Rachel (Wu) and her fiancé Nick’s (Golding) as they travel to visit his family and friends in his native Singapore.
There are surprises in store for Rachel to discover about her beau, including the fact that Nick’s family is extremely rich.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the movie, will run the show, with its director Jon M. Chu as one of the producers. It has so far been through a development room to hash out the details and now is in full-on writer’s room mode.
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ TV series: the executive producer talks
Here’s Adele Lim on the show:
“It’s a ‘Crazy Rich’ family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books. Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
