GWEN Turns Creative Independence into Electronic Defiance
GWEN is the solo project of Gwenllian Anthony, songwriter, producer and co-founder of twice Welsh Music Prize-winning band Adwaith. Her debut solo album, UMA, released on October 23 through Libertino Records, moves into industrial electronics, alternative pop and experimental sound design. Written while touring Europe and completed in West Wales, it was co-produced with Steffan Pringle, with additional collaboration from Tim Lewis. Album opener “POP!” introduces that independence through a confrontation with the expectations surrounding artistic success.
POP!: Refusing the Grind Without Giving Up the Dream
A commanding bassline, warped electronics and hypnotic rhythms give “POP!” its restless physical character. The combination connects GWEN’s industrial influences with the directness of pop songwriting, creating a forceful setting for her frustration. Its rhythmic insistence also suits a song concerned with persistence: the music keeps moving as the narrator questions what continuing will cost.
Anthony describes “POP!” as a release of feelings accumulated within the music industry, taking aim at gatekeepers, narrow expectations and the relentless work demanded of artists. Yet its trajectory moves beyond rejection towards renewed ambition. The closing Welsh proverb, meaning that constant tapping eventually breaks the stone, makes endurance central to that shift. My reading is that the song asks how ambition can survive while an artist reclaims the right to define it.
Why It Matters: Creative Freedom Changes the Meaning of Success
Artists can reach a point where professional recognition brings more competing voices into their work. In a recent interview, Anthony describes shifting her attention towards making art she loves and exploring different creative forms. “POP!” gives that tension a musical expression, holding exhaustion and determination within the same statement.
Performing in Cymraeg makes this independence tangible: GWEN develops an adventurous electronic sound through her instinctive creative language. The song’s force comes from treating artistic identity as something she can determine for herself. “POP!” makes success a question of retaining authorship over the dream.
