Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s “Modern Love” features new episodes starring Minnie Driver and Garrett Hedlund, among others. The actors recently gave us a sneak peek at what to expect in the new season.
Minnie Driver talks about how long she’s been involved in production.
Moviefone: Were you familiar with the New York Times column before taking on this role?
Minnie Driver: Yes, I read the column and even participated in the podcast. So I’ve been a part of that for many years now, actually, yeah.
MF: Can you explain to those viewers who aren’t familiar what the “Modern Love” column is?
People submit their own stories from their lives and experiences to the New York Times, which are then edited into these beautiful essays. Those essays were then turned into a podcast with actors reading them. That IP was then turned into a beautiful anthology series that Amazon created. So, there’s a real truth underlying all of these stories.
MF: What I love about this movie is “Modern Love,” but it’s not just about romantic love. It’s all about relationships and different kinds of love.
Yeah. There are many kinds of love, and I think we get stuck in this idea that romantic love is the be all and end all, but love is countless and precious.
MF: Stephanie, what is she dealing with in your episode?
Well, she’s married to a man, and they have a child. She also has another daughter from a previous marriage, and her husband, her late husband died, and he left her a car that was his, and she remains connected to him in that car. That’s where she goes to talk to him, to be with him, to love him, and due to circumstances, they have to sell that car. And it’s really about how do we let go? How do we let go and move on in our lives? What do we have to give up and what do we have to fight for to hold on to?
MF: And I have to admit, watching that episode, I get that same feeling. I like to keep things because a lot of them have memories associated with them. Is that how you feel about things? Are you one of those people that you can just get rid of?
No. I have a really hard time getting rid of things. Everything has a story and a meaning, and… These stories make up our lives. So I try to keep it simple, but I do have things that are incredibly important to me.
MF: It’s based on a true story. So, the real person that it’s based on, have you ever had a chance to talk to that person?
No, I haven’t. I haven’t done that at all,
MF: But personally, I think you might actually be interested in what we just talked about, because things are important. It’s really important to hold on to things, and especially in this case it’s because for her it’s…
She feels like this is the only place she can go to talk to her late husband, her first husband. What I love about this story is, her second marriage, she’s actually very happy, and her new husband is very understanding, and it’s very touching.
Yes, he has a great generosity of spirit and feels that hearts are big enough to accommodate both dead husbands and living husbands.
MF: She’s very lucky in that sense. So, when you approach the role of someone… And you know it’s a true story, and even though you didn’t get to talk to the real person, you know it really happened to someone. How do you approach preparing for this?
I mean, I actually had the script, and I just saw the story unfold, and I really worked on it. The preparation was reading the story, absorbing it, and appreciating it.
Garrett Hedlund talks about a love story in his episode.
Moviefone: For those people who haven’t watched the first season, could you explain to them, I know, Modern Love, because I mean, it’s an anthology. You don’t have to watch every episode.
Garrett Hedlund: Yeah. It’s wonderful encounters and occurrences, heartbreak, finding, and loss, all set in the wonderful city of New York City and its surrounding areas. True stories, wonderfully brought to life, sometimes fantastical, but never fail to warm your heart and open your mind to a little modern love.
MF: What type of love and relationships are we dealing with in your episode?
Hedlund: In our episode? Well, two people in relationships who end up losing their partners to each other, and then those two people in a con
