When the great Sam Neill died last month, part of the sorrow at his passing was knowing he won’t be gracing our screens in future. But there’s good news via Deadline that Neill filmed a yet-to-be-announced role in Sony and Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda.’

‘The Maze Runner’ director Wes Ball wrapped shooting on the movie in April, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason playing Princess Zelda.

What’s the story of ‘The Legend of Zelda’?

The ‘Legend of Zelda’ game franchise, created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, first debuted via Nintendo in 1986. The game follows the elf-like warrior Link and Princess Zelda as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord-turned-demon king.
Across the decades, the franchise has sustained as one of Nintendo’s most iconic, selling over 150 million units with multiple installments across various gaming consoles, one of the most famous behind 1998’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.’
It has also spawned animated TV adaptations. With so much source material to draw upon, there’s big prospects for a sequel. But fans will have to wait and see which elements or storylines from the game will make it into a movie.
Though the Neill news comes via Deadline’s sources, we also have more official word that Uli Latukefu (‘Black Adam’), Dichen Lachman (‘Severance’) and Yvonne Strahovski (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’) are also all aboard the movie.
Latukefu plays the villainous Ganondorf, Strahovski is some sort of royal and Lachman will be Impa, the bodyguard and advisor to up-and-comer Bragason’s Zelda.
When will ‘The Legend of Zelda’ be on screens?
Sony has dated the movie for April 30th, 2027.
