Warner Music Group’s aggressive international expansion isn’t finished yet: Warner Music Austria’s roster is officially set to gain “direct access to” Vienna-based indie Tonherd’s “state-of-the-art” studio under a broader partnership agreement.
Warner Music Austria, ADA Central Europe, and the relevant “full-service, end-to-end music company” formally disclosed that partnership today. Led by Constantin Kaiser, Florian Koch, and Valentin Bröderbauer, Tonherd deals in “everything from songwriting and production to release,” according to the involved parties.
And per the appropriate website, Tonherd’s had a hand in projects from Stella Maria, Virginia Ernst, Billie Steirisch, and NOËMI as of late.
Now, its roster is poised to benefit from global distribution services and adjacent “strategic support” from Warner/ADA; Michael Russ has kicked off the distro tie-up, with releases from ams, Fräulein Peter, and others teed up for later in 2026.
On the studio-use side, “Warner Music Austria’s entire local artist roster” is expected to receive the initially highlighted “direct access to Tonherd’s state-of-the-art studio facilities.”
Absent from the companies’ brass-tacks announcement is any mention of the financial and ownership specifics at hand. Of course, equity investments certainly factor into many of the majors’ deals.
But some of these deals have materialized without ownership changes as of late; AWAL earlier this year inked a distribution and promotion partnership with Italy’s Artist First, which stressed that it “remains a fully independent company,” for instance.
Building on the point, Warner Music Austria GM Franz Pleterski framed the pact as the start of “a new, forward-looking, and market-aligned model of cooperation between the indie and major label sectors.”
“With this partnership, we aim to support artists as partners from the very early stages of their development and demonstrate our commitment to local Austrian music, while simultaneously creating a new, forward-looking, and market-aligned model of cooperation between the indie and major label sectors,” the IFPI Austria president said.
“I am very much looking forward to this collaboration and to the talent that will be discovered through it in the coming years,” Pleterski concluded.
Beyond the fresh “model of cooperation,” which will be worth keeping in mind moving forward, today’s agreement represents the latest in a line of global deals for Warner Music on the year.
This refers but isn’t limited to the acquisition of multiple international catalogs, an “expansion into the Bengali music market,” a virtual-artist union in China, and a minority stake in TuStreams (“a leading independent force in the fast-growing Música Mexicana space”).
