The film drew inspiration from the Milan High School Indians, a tiny Indiana school that won the state’s high school basketball championship in 1954. Their improbable victory became legendary in Indiana sports history. However, screenwriter Angelo Pizzo created most of the film’s characters and conflicts rather than recreating the real team’s story exactly.

2. Gene Hackman Thought the Movie Would be a Bomb

Reportedly, Hackman had no faith that the project would be successful during production and feared that the film would damage his career. At the time, director David Anspaugh was an inexperienced filmmaker, and Hackman worried he was over his head with the modest budget and demanding schedule. Eventually, the two-time Oscar winner watched a rough cut of the film and was impressed with what Anspaugh accomplished.

3. Dennis Hopper Knew How to Play a Drunk

After years of battling drug and alcohol abuse, ‘Hoosiers’ was one of the first films Hopper made after getting sober. Which is why it’s so ironic that he would play town drunk Wilbur “Shooter” Flatch.

In order to look convincingly intoxicated when Shooter stumbles onto the court, Hopper would ask for a 10-second warning before the cameras began to roll and he would spin around in circles until he became dizzy. It was a technique he learned from his friend James Dean while he was preparing to play a drunk in the 1956 film ‘Giant‘, which also starred Hopper.

4. Five of the Actors Were Suspended from their Real College Basketball Teams

In one of the strangest facts about the movie, the NCAA suspended five college basketball players who appeared in ‘Hoosiers’ for three games because they had been paid for their performances, breaking NCAA rules at the time. In addition, four of the players were also asked to return their earnings from the film.

5. The Movie was Released Internationally Under a Different Title

In other countries, ‘Hoosiers’ was retitled ‘Best Shot’ because distributors feared that international audiences wouldn’t understand the word “Hoosier,” which is a nickname for someone from Indiana.

What is the plot of ‘Hoosiers’?

Failed college coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) gets a chance at redemption when he is hired to coach a high school basketball team in a tiny Indiana town. After a teacher persuades star player Jimmy Chitwood (Maris Valainis) to quit and focus on his long-neglected studies, Dale struggles to develop a winning team in the face of community criticism for his temper and his unconventional choice of assistant coach: Shooter, a notorious alcoholic.
