Curious about the Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity,” but didn’t go see it in theaters? I’ve got great news: You can now rent or buy it on demand on major streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime Video.

To say Colleen Hoover adaptations are uneven at best is an understatement, and though I reviewed “Verity” right here at /Film and called it “dead on arrival,” I also think it’s among the best, if not the best, adaptation of Hoover’s work. So what’s going on with this movie at a glance? Directed by Michael Showalter and adapted by Nick Antosca from Hoover’s novel of the same name, “Verity” opens as middlingly successful fiction writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) heads to an important meeting at a publishing house before she ends up getting splattered with blood after a cyclist gets hit by a cab. (Yes, it’s weird that the inciting incident of this movie is this insane and is never mentioned again, but it’s a Hoover movie. Go with it.) After Lowen is comforted by a handsome stranger who also lends her his shirt for her meeting, she reunites with that same guy at the meeting … and as it turns out he’s Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett), husband of the best-selling thriller writer Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway).

As Jeremy explains, Verity is unable to complete her best-selling series, but she’s a fan of Lowen’s work, and she wants to hire Lowen as a ghostwriter. Before long, Lowen is moving into the Crawfords’ absurdly beautiful and massive Vermont home, scouring a draft of Verity’s apparently secret autobiography, and finding herself in compromising positions with Jeremy. Also, is Verity actually in a catatonic state? There’s a lot going on here and almost all of it is categorically nuts, but Hathaway makes it (slightly) fun.

Verity’s box office haul means more Colleen Hoover movies are coming

Whether or not you think “Verity” is any good, filmgoers certainly showed their support for the Colleen Hoover cinematic universe by seeing this movie in droves when it came out in the US on October 2, 2026. “Verity” was an indisputable box office success when it hit theaters, and I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ll be getting way more Hoover movies as a result; unfortunately for anyone curious about this aforementioned cinematic universe, “Verity” is probably Hoover’s best book, which isn’t saying much.

Still, I’ll admit that “Verity” has its moments, and every single one of those moments is thanks to the enduring talent and power of Anne Hathaway. Hathaway has had a pretty great 2026 thus far, and even though “Verity” isn’t her best performance of the year, she still gives 150% in every single scene. Because of the way the film and story are structured, Hathaway’s Verity primarily only shares scenes in flashback with Josh Hartnett’s Jeremy — sadly, she and Dakota Johnson’s Lowen only get one steamy, sapphic moment before we learn the whole thing was nothing more than a dream — but Hathaway is absolutely electric as the devious, smirking, sexy Verity, who finds herself incandescently envious of her own children after having to share Jeremy’s attention and love.

“Verity” was a relatively recent release, so the fact that it’s already available to buy or rent on demand might feel surprising until you recall that it’s an Amazon MGM production, which also likely means it’ll be free for Prime members eventually. For now, you can rent or buy “Verity” on Amazon and other platforms.
