Carlos Alcaraz was forced to work hard to reach the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open, as the world No 3 was taken to a dramatic second-set tiebreak by Nikoloz Basilashvili, before he sealed a 6-1 7-6 (13-11) victory.

The Spaniard has now qualified for the 60th quarter-final in his ATP Tour career and will face Tommy Paul in the last eight.

Alcaraz raced to a commanding lead in the opening set, hitting nine winners before Basilashvili hit back in the second, responding to an early break from the Spaniard before saving two break points to force the tiebreak.

With Momentum on the Georgian’s side, Basilashvili surged to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak, but Alcaraz responded with a booming forehand to the baseline to draw level at 4-4.

The tension was high as they battled to 11-11, but despite his resilience, Basilashvili ultimately relented.

Medvedev fumed, crouching on his left leg, before repeatedly punching the court with his fist.

He regrouped and staged an epic comeback to take the match to a tiebreak, in which Medvedev claimed seven points on the bounce to book a tie against French qualifier Adrian Mannarino.
