Carlton has handed Wade Derksen a three-game suspension after the defender was charged with drink-driving in Jabiru, in the Northern Territory, in September.

The 25-year-old will also miss all of the Blues’ pre-season matches ahead of the 2027 AFL season.

The Blues have since released a statement addressing the incident, with Carlton General Manager of Football Chris Davies making it clear the club was disappointed with Derksen’s actions.

“While we acknowledge the upcoming legal process will carry its own penalty, Wade’s conduct falls well below the standards we expect,” Davies said.

“Wade is fully aware how disappointed we are in what occurred. We will continue to support him throughout this period as he takes full responsibility for his actions.”

On top of his suspension, Carlton also confirmed Derksen will be required to undergo counselling following the incident.

Derksen also addressed the situation in the club’s statement, apologising for his actions and admitting he had let people down.

“I want to express how sorry I am for what I did,” Derksen said.

“The choice I made to get behind the wheel that day was unacceptable and is a moment I deeply regret. I have let a lot of people down and for that I apologise.”

The 25-year-old has played 15 AFL games since joining the Blues this season, having failed to make a senior appearance during his four seasons at GWS.

It adds to what has already been a messy off-season for Carlton, with Lachie Cowan also handed a two-game suspension.

Cowan was found guilty of conduct unbecoming following an investigation into his use of an illicit substance.
