6AM – BLAKEY TRADE TWIST, BLUES’ FRESH OFFER

Nick Blakey could be in new colours by the end of the day after talks accelerated between North Melbourne and Sydney.

With less than two days left in the trade period the Kangaroos have improved their offer for the wantaway halfback, mindful they need time to complete other deals for Josh Goater (Hawthorn), Nick Murray (Adelaide) and Zane Duursma (to Melbourne).

AFL Media reports the Kangaroos have floated pick 33, currently owned by the Demons, as an add-on to the Blakey trade.

It was reported on Monday night the Kangaroos had already added their 2028 first-round pick to the existing centrepiece of pick 6. They would potentially offer a 2027 second-rounder as well.

The fact pick 33 has been mentioned in Blakey talks suggests the Duursma deal is close, and completing the pair of trades on Tuesday would mean the Kangaroos can spend deadline day trying to satisfy Adelaide for Murray.

That could be difficult if they have already traded out their 2026 and 2028 first-round picks for Blakey.

Carlton is also trying to complete a deal for Lachie Whitfield before the deadline having put forward several new offers for the GWS halfback.

The Blues have offered Sydney’s 2027 first-round pick “as one of several options”, according to AFL Media.

They have also offered picks 25 and 26 in exchange for Whitfield plus either pick 28 or 31.

The trade deadline is 7:30pm AEDT Wednesday.
