When Clint Eastwood directed and starred in ‘Unforgiven’ back in 1992 with Morgan Freeman co-starring, the result was a big success that earned four Oscars. So you can certainly see why Michael Keaton, making his own attempt at directing a Western, might try to replicate some of that magic.
Per Deadline, Keaton is aboard to direct and star in ‘Rode to Ruin,’ a new Old West epic that will see him sharing the screen with Freeman.
It won’t be the first time the pair have appeared together: the actors previously both worked on 1988’s ‘Clean and Sober.’

What’s the story of ‘Rode to Ruin’?
Working from R. Dean McCreary’s script, Keaton will portray retired Marshal Henry Tillman, while Freeman is a wanted outlaw named Joseph Mulberry.
The U.S. Marshal searched forty years for his wife’s killer, and the cold trail finally heats up and leads him to an aging outlaw losing his memory –– and to a buried truth neither man may survive.

Here’s what Keaton told Deadline about the movie:
“When I first read it, I thought, this is really good — and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together. Once we talked, it became clear we were on the same page. Just as ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ isn’t simply a prison movie, ‘Rode to Ruin’ isn’t simply a Western. It’s a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West.”
