I’m not gonna play the SEC love circle game involving Missouri, Ole Miss and Florida. Let’s see how each of those teams does moving forward. Ole Miss did beat the Tigers in emotionally charged Oxford, but I still think LSU is the best of the bunch for now. Injuries might take a toll on the Tigers, but blowout wins over Clemson and Texas A&M have to count for something. Again, you could put any of those other SEC teams here — or whomever — and I’d listen to your case.

The Utes have been pretty dominant so far, even if it has been against a softish schedule — the worst team in the SEC in Arkansas and one of the bottom feeders in the Big 12 this year in Iowa State. Utah is likely to be 6-0 when it hosts Houston on the 24th. It has Kansas this week and at dead Colorado the week after. The Big 12 is wide open and right now, Utah gets slotted here by default. You want to put BYU or Texas Tech here, fine.

It’s pretty clear who the top seven teams are right now. Teams eight on down are fairly interchangeable. Of that bunch, I’m putting Oregon here because I think the Ducks might have turned a corner with that win at USC. Talent-wise, they are one of the most talented teams in the country, and maybe we need to re-evaluate the Ducks’ first two games — a close win to Boise, which appears to be the class of the G6, and the loss at Oklahoma State, which might wind up being the best team in the Big 12. UCLA will offer a good test to see where the Ducks are off the idle week.

That win over Northwestern looks a whole lot better this week, doesn’t it? We’ll see if the Hoosiers get any of their injured players back this week as preseason is over. We don’t know how good Nebraska is, but the Huskers are undefeated, and we know the atmosphere will be insane. It’s a big test for the 2026 Hoosiers. Pass it, and a bigger game with Ohio State awaits.

I might have underrated Alabama this year. I did expect it to be undefeated at this point in the season, so it is right where I thought it would be record-wise, but offensively, the Tid look scary. Now, we’re not talking about super defenses in Kentucky, Florida State and Miss State, but the play of Keelon Russell has been elite. A huge two-game stretch with Georgia and then a trip to Tennessee awaits.

North Carolina made things a little uncomfortable in the second half, but the Irish running game and clutch play from CJ Carr fended off any upset thoughts UNC had. Potential flat spot this week against Stanford, which was annihilated at Wake Forest, as next week the Irish have their second-toughest game on the slate at BYU.

The Buckeyes have Jeremiah Smith and you don’t. That’s pretty much what it comes down to. Did exactly what I thought they would do to Iowa. Laying a huge number this week against dead Maryland in a super flat sandwich spot ahead of the game in Bloomington.

About the only thing which has been a negative for the Canes has been a laundry list of injuries. Joining that list Saturday night were T Matthew McCoy, DE Marquise Lightfoot and DB Ethan O’Connor, to name a few. But the talent level and depth in Coral Gables has very few rivals right now in the sport. Damon Wilson and Chase Smith starred for a defense that was in the Clemson backfield all night long. A very welcome off week for Miami ahead of a visit from the Seminoles.

Georgia, for the first time this season, was predictably a little flat ahead of the trip to Tuscaloosa this week. As anticipated as Ohio State at Texas was, I’d expect this atmosphere to be off the hook, as the Tide try to knock off UGA in a second consecutive regular-season meeting.

The Longhorns are here by virtue of the two current top-15 wins they have over Ohio State and Tennessee. If Oklahoma has anything left in the tank, I’d expect the Sooners to show it this week. There’s been a pretty decent history of underdogs faring well in the Red River game, so despite OU looking dreadful offensively — it is dead last among P4 teams vs. other P4 teams in offensive EPA — the Texas offense is going to need to produce more than it has so far as well (40th in offensive EPA among P4 vs. P4). Five straight teams currently in the top 17 await the Longhorns after this one.
