An update from Cricket Australia on Steve Smith’s potential concussion awaits as Pat Cummins’ men chase six more wickets for victory in the first Test against South Africa in Durban. Live updates below!

The hosts will start day five 4/102 in pursuit of a target of 421 with World Test Championship final centurion Aiden Markram (45*) and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder (5*), who as stand-in captain famously declared and denied himself a shot at Brian Lara’s world record when 367 not out against Zimbabwe last year, at the crease.

“They’ll do well to get the draw here,” former Australian leg spinner Kerry O’Keeffe said on Kayo Sports.

“The pitch is shifting, variable bounce and big turn.

“There hasn’t been a draw in South Africa since 2016, so the odds are against the Proteas.”

Josh Hazlewood picked up two scalps late on Monday, while Matt Renshaw followed up his heroics with the bat by claiming his first Test wicket and Cummins also got in on the act.

But the Australians were without Smith, who was struck on the helmet by an Anrich Nortje bouncer while batting yesterday.

The 37-year-old played out the rest of his innings, but failed to take the field late on day four with Cricket Australia saying there was assessing his condition as he watched from the dressing room.

A verdict of concussion will mean Smith will miss the second Test starting Sunday and the champion batter is set to learn his fate on Tuesday morning local time.
