Mackenzie Harvey – whose father Ian played 73 ODIs for Australia from 1997-2004, was the star with the bat for the Redbacks in a staunch fourth innings rearguard effort at the Adelaide Oval.

Chasing 422 for victory following a chaotic 18-wicket second day in which they were rolled for just 154, the 26-year old teamed up with Nathan McSweeney for an unbroken 140-run stand to spark hopes of an unlikely run chase.

Harvey reached stumps at 90 not out in a counterpunching knock that featured 13 fours and a six, while McSweeney survived a dropped catch at slip off Warriors quick Kieran Elliott to finish unbeaten on 57.

The Redbacks will enter the fourth day on 1/182, with 240 required for a remarkable win.

Discarded Test opener Jake Weatherald has been the only wicket to fall, edging behind off first innings hero Jhye Richardson for 24.

Resuming on 6/79, the Warriors mustered 169 to take the Redbacks’ target past 400 thanks to a fighting 48 from Ashton Agar.

Agar put on 31 for the last wicket with Liam Haskett before being bowled by McSweeney’s part-time spin to end the innings.

A Warriors win would likely extend their lead atop the Shield table, having secured a win and a draw in their two matches to date.

In Tasmania, the early-season trend towards batting friendly pitches continued, as the hosts cashed in with three half-centuries on the first day against NSW.

Teague Wyllie, Jake Doran and Bradley Hope all passed 50, with the latter two unbeaten on 69 and 83 respectively at stumps on an unbroken 153-run partnership that took the Tigers to 5/335.

The one major blemish was an ill-fated promotion to opener for Mitch Owen, with the all-rounder sensationally caught by Nic Maddinson at mid-wicket for a first-ball duck.

Otherwise, it was a rough return to Shield cricket for the axed Test opener and Blues captain, who also bowled eight wicketless overs.

Wyllie, however, was frustrated to give away a strong start, chipping a return catch to Jake Scott on 64.
