Single • Guessing Game EP (2026). Adelaide, South Australia, AU.

Formed in late 2023, Adelaide five-piece The Hazys combine gritty guitars, groove-driven melodies and emotionally direct songwriting. Their debut EP, Honest Lie, established that foundation, with subsequent releases developing their range. “Provoke” brings a heavier subject into focus, exploring the effects of substance abuse on families. Released ahead of their second EP, Guessing Game, it connects the band’s anthemic instincts with a plea for empathy and change.

An abrupt opening gives way to restrained guitar and light drums, creating space for frontman Asher Hammat’s quieter delivery. The chorus intensifies that tension through more forceful singing, before a closing guitar passage brings drums and vocals together for a final surge. The arrangement’s shifts give the song an emotional progression, moving between vulnerability and frustration.

Its subject places the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse within family relationships, expressing a desire for sobriety alongside the need to be understood. Hammat’s movement from restrained verses to strained, emphatic choruses reinforces that appeal. The song can be heard as an attempt to reach someone when ordinary conversation has stopped feeling sufficient.

Emotional directness can become especially powerful when an arrangement allows tenderness and anger to coexist. “Provoke” draws on that relationship, giving distress both quiet space and a forceful outlet. Its intensity serves the difficulty of communicating through a painful situation.

For The Hazys, the song adds substance to their developing musical identity. Their melodic accessibility becomes a way into a subject whose impact extends beyond the person experiencing addiction. “Provoke” finds its force in making the surrounding family’s pain audible.
