Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat and director Dylan Meyer about their work on ‘The Wrong Girls’, developing the screenplay, the themes Meyer wanted to explore, what it was like for Stewart to be directed by her wife, the characters’ deep friendship, and what it was like for Shawkat to create that on screen with Stewart.

Moviefone: To begin with, Dylan, can you talk about developing the screenplay and as a director, what were some of the themes you wanted to explore with this movie?
Dylan Meyer: I wanted to get underneath how friendship can be just as big and important of a relationship in your life as your family or your spouse. I think communal living is something that has started to sound more and more appealing to me as I’ve gotten older, and I wrote this movie about my best friend Maggie, but also, there are a lot of “wrong girls” in my life that have come through for me and picked me up when I’ve been down and all those girls are worth totally making a movie about. There is just something so special about those relationships and so meaningful to me. I really wanted to immortalize that, and I wanted it to have the scope and spirit of a big movie, but being a pretty contained and not super expensive movie to make. I wanted a genre. I wanted giant squids. I wanted talking cats. I wanted it all.

MF: Kristen, what was it like collaborating with Dylan on set as a director and watching her execute her vision for this project?
Kristen Stewart: I speak for myself, but I actually can speak for everyone who worked on this movie. Everyone was so proud of her and unsurprised. We had never seen her do it before, and she’s such an accomplished writer, I mean, I’ve known her for ages, but her crew didn’t. It was like, “So, how’s this girl gonna run this like massive project?” And it was with delicacy and patience, and also silliness. I think there’s this idea that directors need to be a sort of different thing. Not to make this like a girl vs. boy thing, but she had this real wise, knowing, steady, fast, and maternal instinct in regards to this movie. Everyone just fell in line and then was able to just have it themselves and love it themselves and possess it. So, then it just feels like, that’s a movie. It’s like you just know when someone should be telling a story and it’s coming from the right place and it’s so easy to follow that person. Watching her do that just made us all flutter.

MF: Finally, Alia, can you talk about Molly and Frankie’s friendship and creating that on screen with Kristen?
Alia Shawkat: It was wonderful to create it. I’ve known Kristen for a while. It was just like kismet, you know, and a ripe opportunity to come together and make this. Like it was like always meant to be. It had that kind of magical vibe to it, you know? Where sometimes you end up working with an actor that you always hoped you would and you know each other and you’re just like, we have good chemistry. We’re buds. “Wouldn’t it be right if we got to do a stoner buddy comedy together?” I always hoped for that. But it was a real dream situation. It was really meant to be. I’m such a big fan of her as an actor and as a director. Then when Dylan came to me with this project, I was just like, “Wow, this is the crew. I want to be a part of it.” I was just honored that they were like, “You are a wrong girl.”
